Carpet, rugs, and cleaning
Consumers
shopping for carpet and rugs need to be able to differentiate between
the two terms. Carpeting typically refers to wall-to-wall fabric flooring
that is professionally installed. On the other hand, rugs refer to pieces
of fabric that only cover part of the floor. Usually rugs are small
enough that they can be carried by one or two people.
Before installing new carpet homeowners or businesses should consider
any other renovations they want to do to their space. For example, it
is much easier to paint walls and paint ceilings without having to worry
about getting paint on new carpet.
When shopping for carpet, businesses and homeowners should decide if
they want to purchase from a retailer or a wholesale carpet dealer.
A wholesale carpet dealer offers discounts, but often cannot make deliveries
to home addresses. However, consumers may be able to rent a trailer
to pick up the carpet. Also, wholesale carpet dealers may have a minimum
purchase amount for a transaction.
The next step requires deciding upon a style and a brand of carpet.
For example, Shaw carpet is a popular carpet maker based in the United
States that sells a number of styles including berber carpet. When picking
out carpet, buyers can take samples to see what will look best in the
room. Remember, a carpet sample will look different in a store then
it will in the home because of differences in light and surrounding
colors.
Consumers who decide that wall-to-wall carpet is not for them have other
options. Investigate laminate and wood floors and consider purchasing
rugs to place over the bare space.
Following is a partial list of some of the available types of
rugs on the market:
•Oriental rugs are handmade and are typically the most expensive
rugs. The older they are the more expensive the price will be.
•Bathroom rugs are placed by the bathtub, shower, or toilet. In
addition to highlighting colors of the room and setting off areas of
the bathroom, bathroom rugs also absorb water after a shower or bath.
Every few weeks make sure that mildew does not accumulate on the bottom
of the rug.
•Area rugs set off sections of a room. They can be placed on top
of carpet as well as bare floor. Area rugs come in different sizes and
shapes. They can be rectangular, circular, or square.
Cleaning is important for both carpet and rugs. Check the manufacturer's
recommendations for care. For example, some vacuums are appropriate
for carpet but are not appropriate for wool rugs and carpet tiles. Also,
check for recommendations for professional carpet cleaning services.
The carpet or rug should also include recommendations for spot removal.
Usually these tips do not vary from material to material. Some common
cleaning tips include blotting the stain rather than rubbing it and
using a white towel or clean white paper towels. Note that professional
carpet cleaners often recommend that carpet owners do not use commercial
carpet cleaning products because these can leave a residue that picks
up more dirt over time.
